Regional climate modeling using COSMO-CLM model

Platonov Vladimir
Moscow State Uiversity

DRIVER: Using the regional climate model COSMO-CLM for detailed climate changes simulation in the European part of Russia, Arctic, tropical zone etc.

STRATEGY: Global climate models don't allow to assess climate changes features on the regional scales reliably. Therefore using the regional climate model COSMO-CLM will permit to solve many urgent tasks of taking into account and simulation of the local climate factors using coarse grid data from global re-analyses. Climate changes simulation in the European part of Russia and Arctic basin seems most urgent now.

OBJECTIVE: Investigation of the peculiarities of taking into account many local factors (e.g., surface) on the climate simulation quality.

IMPACT: Advance in the regional climate modeling quality (European part of Russia, Arctic, tropical zone) at the expense of using the regional model COSMO-CLM.

USAGE: Climatology, a broad range of economic sectors, requiring long-term forecasts of regional climate conditions (energy, agriculture etc.).

Numerical simulations of polar lows.

Verezemskaia Paulina
Moscow State Uiversity

DRIVER: Numerical simulations of polar lows using three-dimensional non-hydrostatic model WRF

STRATEGY: 1) Set the model 2) Model assimilation of remote sensing satellite data, writing programs for processing 3) Modeling mesocyclones conforming to the region and time of occurrence 4) The model verification, modeling quality assessment, data processing

OBJECTIVE: Fill "gaps" in the understanding of the physics of the process, after the first - improvement of the phenomenon forecasting.

IMPACT: Improving the quality of forecasting of polar mesocyclones, improved parameterization of mesometeorological processes in global climate models.

USAGE: Oil production on the shelf seas of the North Atlantic and the Russian Arctic, the problems of the forecast weather conditions for maritime navigation in this region, climatology.
